EBU renew partnership with International Canoe Federation

The EBU and the International Canoe Federation (ICF) have agreed on a three-year renewal of the worldwide media rights for the Canoe World Championships from 2017-2019.

The agreement will provide the EBU with exclusive worldwide media rights to all the 2017-2019 Canoe World Championships. This guarantees the ICF free-to-air coverage of all their events on television, radio and digital platforms.

The events included in the agreement are the next three ICF Sprint World Championships (23-27 August 2017 in Racice, Czech Republic; 21-25 August 2018 in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal and 2019 in Szeged, Hungary) and the next three ICF Slalom World Championships (29 September-1 October 2017 in Pau, France; 12-16 September 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and 2019 in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain).

The ICF World Championships include both women and men as well as paracanoeing competitions. Athletes from more than 90 countries participate, making canoeing one of the world’s most popular water sports.

To make the events even more spectacular and attract new fans, the ICF, in recent years, has been testing new formats both in Slalom and  Sprint. This year, the ICF Slalom World Championships will include a new Extreme Canoe Slalom which will see kayakers race against each other rather than against the clock.

“We are happy that another international sport federation, the ICF, has once again entrusted the EBU and its Members to ensure wide free to air exposure to the Canoe World Championships” says Julien Ternisien, EBU Head of Sports Rights – Summer Sports.

ICF President Jose Perurena commented: “The ICF is proud and honoured to continue its collaboration with EBU for our TV products. They have been an extremely useful partner in developing our sport around the world and we believe this continued agreement will help develop and expose canoeing to our fans further.”
